Pay: $18.00/hr
INTERNSHIP FOCUS
Second Harvest Heartland is seeking a Planned Giving Intern to assist with contacting existing annual donors to gauge their interest in furthering their support through planned giving. The preferred candidate can demonstrate skills in fundraising, sales, community engagement, or similar relationship-centric work. Interested candidates should be detail-oriented and value the role customer service plays in deepening relationships. Comfort communicating with strangers through a variety of channels (email, phone, mail) is necessary.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Determine planned dates and channels for outreach using existing communication templates with opportunity to personalize content
- Over a 4-month cycle, contact 50-100 pre-identified prospects to invite them to a conversation about planned giving with Development staff
- Document notes about your outreach and donor conversations into donor database, utilizing Actions and Opportunities functionality to track progress
- Introduce qualified and interested prospects to the PGO for personalized cultivation and solicitation – opportunity for intern to shadow on these conversations/meetings
- Elevates any outlying donor interests, needs, or concerns to PGO for further support
Potential Secondary Projects: based on the intern's interest, capacity, and the needs of the Planned Giving program, the intern may also assist in the following areas:
- Assist in preparing and mailing personalized thank-you notes, news updates, and invitations for Table of Hope Society events; assist with event planning and logistics.
- Assist in preparing segmentation lists and materials for planned giving direct mail solicitations.
- Shadow donor meetings, support event planning, or assist with one-to-many communications; though, this is secondary to the main work of qualification outreach

- Ability to represent and speak to the mission of Second Harvest Heartland
- Preferred: Experience working within and adding information to a database/CRM
TIME REQUIREMENTS AND SCHEUDLE
- Flexible; Development staff will consistently be available to support in-office on Wednesdays
- 5-10 hours per week, preference for 2 days per week
- Hybrid role: work can be done remotely or in person, at intern’s preference
- 4 months; potential to renew

Interns will gain experience in fundraising, donor relations, and CRM management. The nature of the work in planned giving provides an understanding of a niche subject within the Development field.

- Education about planned giving, a niche Development topic
- Develop transferable skills working in a relationship-centric donor engagement role and utilizing a CRM database; experience is applicable to fundraising, sales, and community engagement careers
- Potential to gain experience in direct marketing or event management; experience is transferable to a variety of client-oriented roles
