Policy Research Intern
The Small Business Advocacy Council (SBAC) focuses on supporting the small business community through advocacy, educational programs and creating platforms and networking opportunities to foster connectivity. The SBAC is laser-focused on improving the small business environment through non-partisan advocacy and grassroots engagement. Some of our advocacy wins include the enactment of legislation lowering excessive fees and reducing regulations for small businesses, passing legislation focused on stabilizing health insurance premiums and moving policies aimed at reducing commercial vacancies in Chicago.
We seek a Policy Research Intern to work with our team of professionals who are committed to supporting and advocating on behalf of the small business community. The right team member will:
- Be a current undergraduate or graduate student (or recent graduate) in public policy, political science, economics, sociology, urban planning, law, business, or a related field
- Possess strong research and writing skills, with attention to detail
- Be interested in public policy and economic development
- Be able to synthesize complex policy topics into clear, concise summaries
- Be a professional and friendly communicator
- Be comfortable working independently and meeting deadlines in a hybrid environment
- Be passionate about advocating for the interests of small businesses Preferred (but not required) qualifications include:
- Previous experience conducting policy research
- Previous experience drafting blogs and opinion pieces
- Competency using one or more programs for data analytics, including Excel, Python, R, SQL, and Tableau
- Competency using Canva to create advocacy materials
As a Policy Research Intern, you will:
- Conduct research and analysis of data that impacts our policy initiatives
- Conduct research and analysis of proposed and enacted legislation
- Assist in creating and editing advocacy-related content
- Meet with SBAC members to explore legislative initiatives and priorities This is a volunteer position.
New interns are expected to work at least 15 hours per week during the school year, and at least 20 hours per week during the summer. This is a hybrid, unpaid internship.
